Working with the Wisdom of Your Cycle
The Bleeding Phase
Days 1-7
A normal, healthy period has 3-7 days of bleeding with no pain.
You have a lower energy level.
You feel withdrawn and introspective.
You shed your uterine lining.
This is the “winter” of your cycle. In winter, the energy of the trees and plants and even many animals is drawn deep within. This is also where your energy is during your bleeding phase. This is also a time for letting go of emotions that went unacknowledged or avoided.
Tools for our bleeding phase:
Hot water bottle or heating pad over the lower abdomen
Period panties, organic pads or menstrual cups (Tampons often cause heavier bleeding and more cramping than other methods.)
Rose or ginger tea
Working with the Wisdom of your bleeding phase:
This is a time for gentle exercise only. Take a walk in nature or focus on flexibility.
Opt for quiet time at home with a mug of tea instead of social outings.
Consume mostly warm, cooked foods and soups.
If you experience painful cramps, use a hot water bottle and rest. Your body is speaking loudly to you. What is it telling you?
The Follicular Phase
Days 7-14
Energy levels increase.
Desire for socializing grows.
The uterine lining is rebuilt, and an egg matures in the dominant follicle.
This is the “spring” of your cycle. In spring, the energy or life force that was drawn deep within begins to make its way outward again. Your energy levels increase, and you desire more connection with the outside world again. You are also rebuilding the lining of your uterus after your monthly cleanse.
Working with the Wisdom of your follicular phase:
Remember that increased energy doesn't mean you must be busy constantly. Make time to just be or do something purely for enjoyment.
Tackle tasks that require concentration and planning.
Incorporate foods that support uterine lining rebuilding, such as eggs, chicken, bone broth, beef liver, goji berries, cooked spinach, and beets.
Ovulation
Days 11-16*
Peak energy levels and physical performance.
Openness to new experiences.
Increased sociability.
Enhanced attractiveness and heightened desire for intimacy.
*The exact time of ovulation varies greatly from woman to woman and even from cycle to cycle. The only way to know for sure if and when you are ovulating is by tracking your basal body temperature and cervical mucous quality.
This is the “summer” of your cycle. In summer, the energy of the trees, flowers, and plants is in its most outward expression. This is also a time of your body’s fullest expression of energy. You likely feel life is easier in this phase.
Working with the Wisdom of your ovulation phase:
Try a higher-intensity exercise class.
Plan fun outings with friends.
Explore new classes or experiences you've been curious about.
Consider discussing a raise at work.
The Luteal Phase
Day 14-(26-31)
Energy levels begin to decline.
Desire for social interaction decreases.
Reconnection with your inner world.
A normal, healthy menstrual cycle lasts 26–31 days.
This is the “autumn” of your cycle. In autumn, the energy of the trees and plants retreats inward. The second week of your luteal phase is an ideal time to take care of things like laundry and prepping a meal so you can rest during your upcoming bleeding phase. Pay attention to your inner landscape and what your body is asking for. This is also a time when you may naturally feel like cleaning and organizing your living space in preparation for your menses.
Working with the Wisdom of your luteal phase:
Take a hike or go for a bike ride.
Focus on completing ongoing projects rather than starting new ones.
Combine adequate protein with fats and carbohydrates to balance blood sugar, sustain energy levels, and curb cravings.
Understanding and aligning with the natural rhythms of your menstrual cycle can enhance your well-being and productivity. By recognizing the unique qualities of each phase, you can tailor your activities and self-care practices to support your body's needs.
